A Wonderful Morning at the Firehouse
Written by Georgene Brazer, DDA Chairman

What a wonderful morning this past Wednesday for second through fifth graders at the Richmond Hill Fire Station where they were read a story, "A Day in the Life of a Firefighter" by Diana Herweek, watched a video that took them on calls, with sirens and lights flashing...a TON OF ACTION.

They toured the fire station, had wonderful snacks, saw the apparatus, sprayed a firehose, and timed a firefighter (2 minutes allowed) putting on firefighting gear. Each child created an evacuation plan, had a chance to win a toy firetruck in a raffle and got a fire helmet.

Thanks go to Chief Brendon Greene for his interest in our community and children. His goal with this program is to have children comfortable with firefighters. If they were ever in a fire, because of programs like this, they would be less likely to hide in face of such danger.

Chief Greene's goal is to build bonds between the department and the community through varied programs which will be offered throughout the year for both adults and children.

How fortunate we are to have such a warm, knowledgeable man whose creativity,  community outreach and team building skills within his department help make  Richmond Hill such a special place to call home.
